A Modern Homesteader
Sitting at the table one day about 4 years ago. Staring out the window of a rental house dreaming of a garden. This would be the stepping stones to where we are now with having a homestead. I really didn't know much about gardeningat the time. I knew how to plant a seed that was it. But in planting that seed in hope of growing food for my family I learned so much that very hot summer in Alaska. As the garden grew bigger I got my first carten of farm fresh eggs and fell in love with the quality of the eggs and tast. It was a big difference from your normal grocery store eggs. So I built my first chicken coop and we got our first flock of old hens. We now have a saying 4 years in to this lifestyle "store eggs tast like disappointment"
Then we got into raising meat Rabbits. I grew up eating alot of game and we did have rabbits. So growing rabbits for meat was a wonderful idea. We got our first breeding trio from a teacher of mine from when I was in high school. My children where so excited to try something that their mom ate as a child.
We found growing rabbits for meat was a wonderful idea for being more sustainable for our family. We raid Silver Fox rabbits for meat and show. Im very passionate about Silver Fox breed but it's always nice to have other breeds in the rabbitry.
This pass year we got our goat Haines, Palmer the bucks and 2 does in milk Ginger and Dotty. This spring the girls had 5 bucklings we weathered for growing as meat goats
As our homestead has grown the more we become more sustainable with a couple beep freezers full of meat and shelfs full of jars food.
I welcome you to the blog of our homestead in Alaska that's on just over an acre in a urban setting.
